Throughout past posts I’ve highlighted the importance of protecting your most precious resource – time. It can be difficult – especially for those that struggle with being people pleasers (cough cough me cough cough). Every time we say yes to one thing we are effectively saying no to everything else.
This is why it is critical that we put the distractions and people pleasing aside, and only say yes to the most important and impactful relationships, priorities and responsibilities in our life.
For the sake of today’s post, let’s operate off of the assumption that we are only saying yes to the most important things. So, with that assumption in place, I want to take the conversation to the next level.
Now that we are only dedicating our time to the most important things, what should we do with them next? How should we approach these relationships, priorities, and responsibilities we’ve committed ourselves to?
Well, in my mind, the answer is simple: We should Give ’em Hell!
The phrase ‘Give ’em Hell’ is a mentality that has echoed in my head for the better part of 2 decades. It’s simple and straight forward, and is a message and mindset that is extremely special to me… let me explain.
As a quick background, this post is inspired by my Grandpa Williams. I’ve been very blessed growing up to have a very loving and supportive family at every level. My Grandpa Williams supported me through his sage advice, sense of humor, genuine warmth and interest in everything I was doing, and presence at all of my important life and sporting events.
On top of all that, my grandfather gave me a consistent piece of advice throughout my life and before I embarked on any significant challenge or next stage of my life. This advice took hold deep down, reverberates in my very being, and is a core part of who I am today – That advice: “Give ’em Hell!”
It didn’t matter whether it was a football game, big exam, heading off to high school, college, and for all I know, kindergarten. I was always encouraged with this message. To be fair, I don’t remember if he told me to Give ‘Em Hell before my first day of kindergarten, but I wouldn’t be shocked if he did – at the very least, it was implied!
The message is so simple, yet speaks to the hard work, grit, and “leave it all out on the field” mentality that we should put towards every single thing that is truly meaningful in our life.
A Call to Action
Today’s post isn’t going to be filled with any how-to’s or recommendations. Rather, I’m asking each and every one of you to look deep inside yourself and think through the most important ‘things’ you have going on in your life right now… the things that you are investing your time in.
Are you giving them your all? Are you doing absolutely everything to be the very best or make the biggest impact possible? Regardless of the result, are you leaving it all out on the field? If not, then I ask you to get back out there and Give ’em Hell!
You still might be asking what that phrase means… Well, I can give you a snapshot of what it means to me.
Give ’em Hell means:
- Don’t hold back.
- Play with a fire and passion that is a level above anyone else around you.
- Don’t save a little in the tank for the next day or next play.
- Don’t let yourself be distracted or somewhere else – be all in at what you are doing in the here and now.
- Be the absolute best version of you in whatever you set out to do.
- Be the best leader, teammate, parent, friend, spouse, sibling, son/daughter, citizen, employer, employee and so on and so forth.
- Leave no doubt in yourself or to those around you that you gave it your all – win, lose or draw.
So much of what Will Athletic stands for, and what I want for all of you (and myself) is to continue to work towards being our very best selves. It takes grit, hard work, passion, and a mentality to not hold anything back in your growth, development and life. It is my sincere hope that this message to Give ’em Hell begins to echo in your mind, body and spirit like it has in mine.
Every time you make the decision to take something on that can have an impact – Give ’em Hell.
Every new job, project, practice, game, exam, stage of life – Give ’em Hell.
No matter what you embark on in life – no matter how big or small it feels – no matter whether the stadium lights are shining down on you or when no one is watching… Give ’em Hell!
If and when you make this commitment to yourself, you will always be able to look yourself in the mirror and know that you gave everything of yourself in your pursuit, and are better beyond measure than if you left anything in the tank.
Let’s get out there this week and Give ’em Hell in everything we do – people will take notice, positive change will happen, and our impact and influence will grow and be felt by the world around us.
In Closing… a Thank You.
Gramps – I just wanted to close this article with a heartfelt and sincere ‘thank you’ for this message of encouragement and mentality that you helped instill in me over the years.
I realize I never actually let you know how big of an impact it made on me over the years, and I didn’t want to let another day go by where I didn’t make it known. Each and every time you said it, I heard you loud and clear. Your message molded me and gave me a strength, fire and determination to attack every challenge, obstacle and new stage of life that has come my way.
I am beyond grateful and hope this message impacts even one more person in the same way that it impacted me.
No matter where I am or what I’m doing in my life, I will always Give ’em Hell!
Discussion Question: What is one high-impact area of your life that you aren’t giving it quite your all? How are you holding back? What can you do differently? Once you answer those questions go Give ’em Hell!
