Happy New Year to all and welcome to 2019!
As the first of January is coming to a close in this new year, it’s hard not to think about what this year has in store.
What opportunities or challenges are coming my way? What will be the defining moment or moments when I sit back and reflect a year from now?
Will I create a better version of myself throughout the new journey that is 2019?
Well, there’s only one way to find out – let’s kick off this new 2019 season and play our best games yet!
Like many, I have a long list of goals ready to roll for 2019.
While I was creating them and now as I review them, I’ve been sitting in a bit of a question as I look towards this new year…
What is my One Big Thing?
You may be asking, what exactly does that mean?
Well, in my mind, it’s that one thing, that if accomplished, would make the year a success. If no other goal was reached, you would still look back at your year filled with pride and with a big smile on your face.
So what is that one big thing for you?
Defining that thing for you doesn’t mean you toss out the rest of your list of goals for the year.
On the contrary, I encourage you to go after each and every one of them with ferocity if you believe they will move you towards your personal vision.
Now what I do believe this exercise gives you is the gift of prioritization. While this year is fresh, new and full of promise, we truly don’t know what is awaiting us.
Plus, you know what they say about the best laid plans.
And if you don’t, take a lesson from Mike Tyson:
“Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face”
I’m not suggesting we all need to walk into 2019 with our head on a swivel. My point is as follows:
Speaking from my personal experience, I always think I have more time than I do, so when crunch time hits, I find myself needing to weigh whether to dedicate time to one thing or another, since time for both just isn’t happening like I planned.
Having your top priority identified will give you clarity when you are tight on time and have to make a choice. Let’s be honest with ourselves, not all goals are created equal. Invest the scare resource of your time on the thing that will bring you the biggest return and most fulfillment.
Even if several of your goals may be easier than this one big thing, be true to your priorities and dedicate time to knocking your top priority out. Your end-of-the-year self will thank you!
Finally, in closing, I want to wish you all a prosperous, healthy, exciting and game-changing 2019! I’m excited to start this journey with you and hope I can play a small part in making this year your best one yet.
Let’s get out there and get after! #unleash
